Abstract

Abstract:

ABSTRACT. This article sets out to reflect on aspects of the ideological and political origins of the Estado Novo dictatorship in Portugal, rooted in the times of the Portuguese First Republic. It is based on the following points of departure: 1) the ‘original ideological basis’ was in Christian Democracy and Social Catholicism; 2) the ‘competing ideological basis’ showed itself in Integralismo Lusitano [Lusitanian Integralism], with transformations relevant to the Estado Novo; 3) the ‘eclectic or syncretic ideological basis’ owed much to the Cruzada Nacional [National Crusade] D. Nuno Álvaro Pereira. Analysis is directed towards the processes of circulation and transference of political notions of nationalism, organicism, corporativism and authoritarianism between ideological and political camps critical of the parliamentary system of government in force under the Portuguese First Republic.

KEYWORDS. Portugal, First Republic, Estado Novo, nationalism, organicism, corporativism, authoritarianism.
