Structural characterization of the interactions between Ionic liquids and MOFs

Abstract: This proposal aims to extend our understanding of ionic liquid structure and determine the effect of confinement on short alkyl chain length ionic liquid within a well ordered metal organic framework material. Neutron diffraction will be used to study the structure of the pure 1-ethyl-3-methyl imidazolium ethylsulfate ionic liquids as well as on filling the pore with the ionic liquid. This information will be coupled with INS data on the same system for which beamtime on TOSCA has also been applied for. In order to probe the structure and facilitate the analysis of the data obtained, selective isotopic substitution on the ionic liquid cation will be used.
