Tuning functionality and bulk behaviour of micelles with cyclodextrins

Abstract: Beta-cyclodextrins (b-CD) are well tolerated in humans without toxic side effects and present in several injectable drug formulations, due to their ability to form host-guest complexes with hydrophobic species. CD host-guest interactions are also exploited in responsive supramolecular structures for applications in controlled drug delivery, medical diagnostics, nanodevices, templating, etc. We have demonstrated that various derivatives of b-CD induce very different effects in two types of micelles: either rupture (and thus release of a payload), or reinforcement. This effect can be switched-off or finely tuned by adding a competing guest (adamantane amine), which is pH sensitive. We request the use of SANS to elucidate the nanoscopic structures formed in these responsive systems and in particular the mechanism of rupture or reinforcement, and the localisation of adamantane.
