Characterization of Aluminium Silicon Foams

Abstract: We propose to investigate two different samples of aluminium-silicon foam both with imaging and diffraction techniques. According to the existing models, the liquid metal foams contain solid constituents which stabilize foam films by either modifying the curvature of the liquid/gas interfaces or by forming particle bridges across metallic films and transmitting repulsive żdisjoiningż forces mechanically. A better understanding of such an aspect would be of great interest from a technological point of view. The INES beam line is particularly suitable to our aim since, besides being a diffractometer, a tomography chamber has been already developed and tested by our team. Three days of beam time are requested. One and half days will be employed to detect the tomographic images of the samples and one and half days will be used to perform diffraction experiments on selected sample volumes
