Abstract: |
This report has been commissioned from MoLAS by the National Maritime Museum in order to record and assess the results of a watching brief carried out at the site of the Old Royal Observatory at Greenwich Park. Preceding the construction of a new planetarium, deep excavation work was monitored between 11.04.05 and 25.04.05. Several archaeological structures of mid-19th Century date were recorded in plan from within the excavated area. These included several brick wells and an air-tight service manhole. Most notably, remnants of a cellar, inserted in 1862 into George Airey's 1837-8 Magnetic Observatory and demolished in 1917, were unearthed to reveal several enigmatic features whose functions must have been purely scientific. Natural ground was observed immediately below the surface at 45.46m above OD, and the highest survival of archaeological deposits occurred at 46.45m OD. |
