Abstract:
An assessment excavation was carried out on the site of the new East Grinstead museum in November 2004, prior to the commencement of construction. Two test trenches were excavated to investigate the site, one of which was located across the portland boundary. A late 19th to early 20th century rubbish pit was located in Trench 1, but no medieval boundary ditch, although medieval pottery was recovered from the lower part of the trench. Trench 2 encountered layers of building demolition from previous buildings on the site, together with some possible construction features, but no medieval features, although medieval pottery was also recovered from its lower levels. The contents of the late 19th to early 20th century pit are particularly interesting. Artefacts from the pit appear to represent rubbish that had been discarded from the Crown Hotel, which fronts the High Street in the adjacent portland.
