Description

Asplenium preussii Hieron. in Brause & Hieronymus (1910: 9).

Lectotype (designated by Tardieu-Blot 1964a: 222):— CAMEROON. “Urwald westlich Buea, 900 m,“ 17 January 1891, P.R.Preuss 584 (B 20 0020294a!), isolectotype B 20 00293!).

Specimens seen:—Western Province: Nyungwe NP, Road Pindura to the border with Burundi, km 21, 27 July 1974, J.Rammeloo 4081 (BR0000016312425); Nyungwe NP, Cyamudongo Forest, 4 April 2021, E. Fischer s.n. (KOBL).

First recorded for Rwanda: — Pichi Sermolli (1985: 147) as Asplenium pseudoauriculatum auct. non Schelpe.

Habitat: —Terrestrial in montane forest, elev. 1900–2300 m.

Distribution in Rwanda:—Western Province: Nyungwe NP, Bweyeye, Cyamudongo Forest.

Distribution in Africa: — Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Nigeria, Cameroon, Gulf of Guinea Isl., D.R. Congo, Sudan, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Rep. South Africa, Madagascar.

Note:— Asplenium preussii is part of a species complex. Viane (2021: 174) considers A. austroafricanum (Schelpe 1967: 208) Viane (2021: 174) and A. pseudoauriculatum Schelpe (1967: 206) as separate species, the latter possibly representing a hybrid (Viane 2021: 174). The material from Rwanda belongs to A. preussii s.str.
