Description
2. Begonia coccinea Hooker (1843, pl.3990)
Type:—[illustration] Botanical Magazine 69: pl. 3990 (1843) (lectotype, designated here).
Notes:— Hooker (1843) described Begonia coccinea from a living specimen, but did not designate a type or cite any herbarium material. He mentioned the species was detected in Organ Mountains by Lobb in 1841, and blossomed in the Veitch nursery in 1842; a search of the Kew herbarium, including the cultivated folders, revealed no specimens that can be linked to either Lobb, Veitch, or Hooker. The illustration included in the protologue is here designated as a lectotype (Art. 9.3 and 9.12 of ICBN, Turland et al. 2018).
