Ujęcie tematyki homoseksualnej w mangach

  • 1. Uniwersytet Śląski

Description

The article focuses on one of the most popular products of Japanese culture – manga, which are specific stories presented in words and images. The author investigated this issue from the perspective of pop culture (following Bogusław Dziadzia, Magdalena Majchrzyk, and Ksenia Olkusz), presenting the context and place of manga in Japanese culture (according to Ewa Witkowska, Helena Jadwiszczok-Molencka, and Jacek Molencki). An interesting thread for the European reader are the topics connected with sex and homosexuality of the shōnen-ai and yaoi subgenres – which the researcher develops. The genre structure of this issue has been presented (using the delineation proposed by Brigitte Koyama-Richard), as also the history of undertaking such themes in manga (which has been analyzed by Aleksandra Lazarek). In the context of the examples cited by the researcher, it was necessary to familiarize the readers both with the situation of non-heteronormative people in Japan (Katarzyna Skop) and with the way of researching literature from the perspective of homosexual motifs in literature (Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick and Tomasz Kaliściak). After presenting theoretical concepts, the author undertakes the description of two popular manga: the "No. 6" series created by Atsuko Asano and Hinoki Kino, and In the Rhythm of Evening and Morning by the author recognized under the pseudonym Harda. In the course of these considerations, the researcher makes use of the previously quoted methodology by recalling the term "homosocial continuum" (after Tomasz Kaliściak) and uses it in the context of the characters of the manga "No.6". During the discussion of the second example, the topic of sex and scenes of violence in the manga is taken up – a case equally broadly described by Ewa Witkowska, to whom the author refers. In conclusion, it has been shown how the 'heteronorms' are broken thanks to the popularization of the representation of romantic and erotic male-male relations in cultural texts, which also include shōnen-ai and yaoi.
