Macrotarsomys Milne-Edwards and G. Grandidier, 1898. Bull. Mus. Hist. Nat. Paris, ser. 1, 4:179.

TYPE SPECIES: Macrotarsomys bastardi Milne Edwards and G. Grandidier, 1898.

COMMENTS: Retained within Cricetinae by Ellerman (1941). Lavocat (1978) and Chaline et al. (1977) aligned Macrotarsomys with the Miocene Kenyan fossil Protarsomys, a relationship questioned by Carleton and Schmidt (1990).
