Description

Naarda furcatella sp. n. (Figs 6, 18, 32, 35)

Taxonomy. Thisspeciesisverysimilarexternallyto N. atrata, butthemale genitaliashowconspicuoussimilaritiestocertainundescribedAfricanspecies.

Description. Wingspan 10.5–12 mm, lengthofforewing 5–6 mm. Thisisoneofthe smallest Naarda species. Antennaefiliform, ciliatewithsetae. Ciliationuniquely (slightly) moredenseinfemalethaninmale. Lengthofcilia 1.5 timesthediameterofflagellumin male, halfthediameterinfemale. Setaealsolongerinmale; 2.5 timeslongerthandiameter offlagellum, infemaleonly 1.5 timeslonger. Labialpalpsfourtimesdiameterofeyesin male, nearly 2.5 timesinfemale; 3rdsegmentsmall, itstiplight; 2ndsegmentbroad, dorsal scaleslong, theirdorsaledgeconvex, inmalenearlydomed. Scale-hoodofvertexnarrowbasedandrelativelylonginmale, broad-basedandshortinfemale. Characteristicwing patternfeatures: patternandgroundcoloursimilarinbothsexes (butthefemalespecimens areworn); forewingcostanotconcaveinmale; groundcolourdarkgrey; subterminalline hardlyvisible, sinuouswithsmall, equalstreaksdirectedinwards; postmediallinedarker thangroundcolour, moresinuousthansubterminalline, stronglyangledinwardsbelow cell; antemedialandmediallinesalsopresent. Reniformstigmaflask- orpear-shaped, brightyellow, bottomthirdwithbig, blackishdot, darkedgeofreniformfragmentedinto shortsections; orbicularstigmawell- marked, asyellowasreniformstigmaandfullyencircledwithdarkline. Groundcolourofhindwinglikethatofforewinginfemale, palerin male; tracesoffasciaepresentatinnermarginonly.

Malegenitalia (Fig. 6). Uncusrelativelylong, slightlydilatedtowardsapex, itstip abruptlypointedtoahook- likestructure. Scaphiumaslongasuncus, slightlysinuous. Vinculumaslongastegumen. Saccusnarrow-basedbutlong, slightlytapering, itstip rounded. Juxtarounded. Valvarelativelyshort, edgesofmedialhalfparallel, basalpartrelativelybroad; costalprocesslarge, biggestinthislineage, broadlytriangularwithpointed andslightlydistallycurvedtip. Apicalfusedstructureaswideascostalprocess, verylong (1/3rdofthewholevalvallength), slightlytapering, itstipslightlycurvedupwards. Sacculusverybroadatbase, apicallytapering. Aedeagusthick, straight, withwell- developed carinalprocess. Vesica (partiallyeverted) withtwo, strongandcurvedcornuti, butwithout scobination.

Femalegenitalia (Fig. 18). Ovipositorlobesrounded. Apophysesthick, especially apophysesanteriores. Apophysesposteriores 1.6 timeslongerthanapophysesanteriores. LobesofsternumA7 long, rounded. Sinuslong, itsbaseextremelynarrow, slightlydilated distally. Posteriorendofductusbursaebroad, butgraduallytaperingtowardscorpusbursae. Colliculumwelldeveloped, sclerotised, funnel- shaped, coveringposteriortwo- thirds ofductusbursae. Corpusbursaeglobular, withseveralwide, curved, denselyscobinate bands; anteriorlywithbroad, verylong, slightlycurvedcervixbursaebeingtwiceaslong asrestofthecorpusbursae.

Diagnosis. Themalegenitaliaofthisnewspeciesaresomewhatsimilar to those of N. glauculalis, but the uncus is narrower in N. furcatella than in N. glauculalis, thesaccusismuchlonger, thedistalfusedstructureofthevalva islongerandprocess- like, theaedeagusislesscurved, thevesicaisarmedby twostrongcornuti, andastrikinglylongcostalprocessispresentinthevalva.

Thefemalegenitaliaof N. furcatella arereminiscenttothoseof N. ineffectalis sensuHolloway (Figs 20–21), butinthenewspeciesthesternumA7 is longer, thecorpusbursaeislesselongate, globular, andmorescobinatethan in N. ineffectalis.

Etymology. Thespeciesnamewasinspiredbythebifurcatevalvaofthemalegenitalia.

Distribution. ThisspeciesisfoundinthecentralpartofThailand, inCambodiaand onSumatraIsland.
