Description

Choosing the victim, regardless of category, the offender takes into account 3 factors: presence, risk and desire. Presence explained as the victim's way of life or circumstances that allow criminals to contact the victim. Risk is defined as the degree of vulnerability of the victim to attack the offender. Desirability means the need for the perpetrator to commit an attack on a particular victim, which follows from his motivation, as well as the characteristics of the victim related to the race, gender of the victims or other specific preferences of serial killers.
Thus, the following behavioral models of serial criminals can be distinguished: 1) "electability" - when the victim is elected for certain criteria (usually with sexual motivation): hair color, age, gender, belonging to a certain social group; 2) "opportunity" - there is no selection as such, the most affordable victim who, according to the offender, will not resist: a prostitute, homeless, elderly patients; 3) "indifference" - the demographic and social characteristics of the victim do not matter (for example, killers act in such a model).
