Harpalus oblitus Dejean, 1829: 273.

The specimen here recognized as holotype is a male glued to a white card that is pinned together with other labels: “ oblitus m. in Dalmatia ”, “ TYPE. Kataev des.” and “ Holotype of Harpalus oblitus oblitus Dejean, 1829. J. Serrano vidit.”.

In the same box of Chaudoir's collection containing the beetles of Dejean (box number 175) it is also found the type of Harpalus oblitus patruelis Dejean, 1829: 275, together with other specimens, bearing various kinds of labels: white card with glued beetle/white card with glued genitalia/white card “ patruelis m. in Hispania”/red card “ TYPE ”/white card “ H. patruelis Dej. = subspecies of oblitus Dej. Z. Mylnář det. 1973”/ Kataev/ Harpalus oblitus patruelis B. Kataev det 2002.

The taxonomy and distribution of the subspecies of H. oblitus was reviewed by Kataev (1993). There are two currently recognized subspecies: the nominal one occupies the eastern Mediterranean whereas H. oblitus patruelis is found in the western part.
