Osbornellus ichnoscapitatus Dominguez & Godoy 2010, sp. nov.

Description

Osbornellus ichnoscapitatus Domínguez & Godoy, sp. nov.

(Figs. 48a–48e)

Description. Length: 5.1 mm. Member of the species O. affinis group. Vertex angulate, median length about equal to distance between eyes at posterior margin. General color pale yellow. Anterior margin of vertex cream colored, sides of median line brown, but light orange near the eyes (Fig. 11). Pronotum as in other members of this species group. Scutellum light yellow, nearly white in center, with two yellowish orange marks in basal angle. Anterior wing as in other members of this species group.

Male genitalia: Pygofer moderately projected posteriorly, apex wide, concave; macrosetae long, dispersed along apical half of pygofer (Fig. 48a). Valve ovate, margins rounded, curved in anterior half. Plates long, apex pointed, setae plumose (Fig. 48b). Style with apophysis short, straight, apex wide, truncate with lobe rounded (Fig. 48c). Aedeagus in ventral view with base quadrate, straight; shaft straight, slender longer than ventral processes, apex truncate (Fig. 48d). Ventral processes arising at one-third length of aedeagus, divergent to apices, slender, apices pointed. In lateral view shaft slender, straight, longer than ventral processes, apex truncate; dorsal projection long, slightly curved caudad, tapered to sharp tip. Gonopore apical. Ventral processes divergent, straight, apices pointed (Fig. 48e).

Diagnosis. Similar to O. affinis, but in O. ichnoscapitatus the vertex has a cream colored band, whereas in O. affinis the vertex is unmarked. O. affinis has the aedeagal shaft similar in shape to that of O. ichnoscapitatus, but without sclerotized spirals on the ventral processes.

Distribution. Known only from Costa Rica; 790–1500 m

Etymology. This species is named for the markings on the head.
