Plekocheilus (Eurytus) episcopalis subsp. corticosus

Description

Plekocheilus (Eurytus) episcopalis corticosus (Sowerby III, 1895)

(Figs 9 C, 10D–G)

Bulimus (Eurytus) corticosus Sowerby III 1895: 214, pl. 13 fig. 2. Type locality: Colombia, Bogotá. Lectotype BMNH 1907.11.21.110 (Breure 1978). Plekocheilus corticosus (Sowerby); Richardson 1995: 307 (references, synonymy). Plectostylus apolinari Pilsbry 1935: 83, pl. 6 figs 1–2. Type locality: Colombia, region of Villavicencio. Holotype ANSP 164566.

Material. Antioquia, Frontino: DMNH 141721 (ex M.L. Walton) [see remarks]; Cundinamarca, Monteredondo, 1370 m, P.I. Scheible leg./1960: FMNH 114075; Monteredondo, km 75 [sic, probably km 54] on road Bogotá–Villavicencio, Scheible & H. Frohmund leg./1961: FMNH 114165; Monteredondo, Scheible leg./1959, 1370 m: FMNH 114167; Bogotá: BMNH 1879.9.6.13-14; Gachetá, A.P. Infante leg./2010; Meta, region of Villavicencio, Hno. Apolinar María leg.: ANSP; Pipiral [sic, = Piperal, km 73 road Bogotá–Villavicencio], V. Guevara leg./1933: DMNH 141724.

Remarks. This taxon differs from P. e. episcopalis by having (1) a stronger columellar fold; (2) a relatively smaller aperture. Piperal is a small village on the road from Bogotá to Villavicencio, 600–700 m elevation. Gachetá is NE of Bogotá. All localities are on the eastern escarpments of the Cordillera Oriental. The specimen from Antioquia, Frontino is only tentatively referred to this taxon; it is the only record from the Cordillera Central for this species. Although elevations are not given in the labels, an altitudinal range of 450–1800 m may be inferred from the localities above.
