Hendelia putealis spec. nov.

Description (Fig. 3). Male. Unknown.

Female. Body length 4.5–5.1mm. Bristles brown. Anterior fronto-orbital bristle 3/4–4/5 length of mid frontoorbital; posterior fronto-orbital absent. Two dorsocentral bristles with one small bristle in front of anterior dorsocentral. One minute and one long pair of lateral scutellar bristles. Head mostly yellow, with frons brown to dark yellow centrally, back of head mottled on dorsal half, and first flagellomere lightly infuscated on inner and apical surfaces; face pilose. Scutum dark yellow with one median vitta and one pair of short, floating sublateral postsutural stripes (sometimes faint). Scutellum dorsally brown, at least at base, although one ROME female with scutellum entirely yellow. Pleuron orange with lower half of katepisternum light yellow; darker specimens with pleuron mottled brown excluding ventral half of katepisternum. Legs light yellow with coxae white, apex of hind femur and tibia brown, fore tarsi dark brown, and mid and hind tarsi brown on fourth and fifth tarsomeres. Wing infuscated on distal 1/3 and along R2+3 at intersection of vein r-m.

Female terminalia. (Fig. 30) Spermatheca small and squat (width 3/4 length) with relatively large pits on outer surface. Spermathecal duct five times length of spermatheca. Ventral receptacle small, poorly sclerotized and approximately 1/3 length of spermathecal duct.

Etymology. The specific epithet is Latin for “pitted”, referring to the irregular surface of the characteristic spermathecae, which are diagnostic for this species.

Comments. Thin lateral notal stripes, which have been independently derived in several Old World Hendelia, distinguish H. putealis from other neotropical Hendelia. The female genitalia are characterized by small, ovate and pitted spermathecae and relatively long spermathecal ducts.
