Maconellicoccus hirstutus Green

Description

Maconellicoccus hirstutus Green

M. hirsutus was collected twice during the recent survey, once on Hibiscus on Viti Levu (on which it was common and causing leaf curl) (Suva, Thurston Gardens, 11.vii.2009) and once on pineapple on Taveuni (Vinuvasa Estate, 22.vii.2009). Williams and Watson (1988b) indicate that it is widespread throughout southern Asia, Australia and Africa. It is polyphagous and has spread to many geographic areas in recent years. It is a potential invasive pest of several crops, particularly pineapple.
