Scaphoideus yaanensis Yang, Chen & Li, 2013, sp. nov.

Description

Scaphoideus yaanensis sp. nov.

(Figs 65–76)

Measurement. Body length including forewing: male 5.00–5.25 mm (n=2), female 5.85 mm (n=1).

Coloration. Anterior margin of vertex with brown thin stripe, broad transverse band between anterior angles of eyes (Figs 65, 66); two complete and one incomplete transverse narrow brown bands on face dorsally, small brown mark on gena near lower angle of eyes (Figs 68, 69). Pronotum with anterior region dark brown, posterior disc with broad transverse yellowish brown band; scutellum with basal half yellowish brown, apical half yellowish white (Figs 65, 66). Forewing pale yellowish brown, veins brown, disc with dark brown and white markings.

Head and thorax. Head with vertex produced rounded anteriorly, shorter on middle line than width between eyes (0.87:1), disc slightly convex; ocelli nearly meet eyes. Face slightly longer in middle line than wide including eyes (1.03:1). Pronotum wider than head including eyes (1.07:1), longer in middle line than vertex (1.55:1); scutellum shorter in middle than pronotum (0.85:1).

Male genitalia. Male pygofer without processes, broadly rounded apically in lateral view with group of very long setae and few shorter setae subapically (Fig. 70). Valve transverse, broad, posterior margin broadly rounded (Fig. 71). Subgenital plate distinctly shorter than pygofer, broadly basally and narrowing distally in ventral view, with four macrosetae laterally and a few short fine setae distally (Fig. 72). Style broad basally, tapering and curved laterad apically (Fig. 73). Connective with pair of slender paraphyses, each paraphysis curved laterad apically and produced into lamella at apex, with a stout tooth-like process at ventral margin (Fig. 73); in lateral view, paraphyses fused with connective at basal one third ventrally (Fig. 74). Aedeagus disassociated from connective; shaft very short and robust, as long as basal apodeme (Fig. 75), with pair of short toothlike apical processes on each side in ventral view (Fig. 76). Dorsal connective slender and long (Fig. 76).

Host plant. Bamboo.

Distribution. China (Sichuan).

Material examined. Holotype: 3, China: Sichuan, Yaan, Tongtaishan (102°59´N, 29°59´E), bamboo, 15–18 July 2010, P. Zhang; paratypes: 1 3, 1 Ƥ, data same as holotype.

Etymology. This species is named after the type locality, Yaan, Sichuan Province, China.

Remarks. This new species is similar to S. rufilineatus Li, 1990 and S. testaceous Li, 1990 in general appearance, but can be distinguished by the shape of the aedeagus, paraphyses and styles. It differs from other species in the genus Scaphoideus in the unique shape of the apex of the paraphyses.
