Thrips dezeeuwi sp. n.

Description. Holotype female. Body brown, legs dark brown, with apex of fore tibiae and tarsi light brown (Fig. 9); antennae almost completely brown, segment III basally light brown with apex dark brown (Fig. 10); fore wing dark except partly at base.

Antennae 8-segmented, segments relatively short; VI slightly tapering to base; segment III length 49–50 microns. Ocellar setae III short, outside triangle (Fig. 11). Pronotal posteromarginal setae 3 left and 4 right, posteroangular setae 52–56 microns. Fore wing chaetotaxy remarkably variable: fore vein of left wing 4, 7 and 9 setae (two gaps), right wing 5, 6, 1 and 8 setae (three gaps) (Fig. 9); left clavus with 6 veinal setae (Fig. 12) right clavus with 5. Metanotum with widely spaced sculpture, in the central third reticulate, without wrinkles, posteriorly diverging, with two campaniform sensilla, anteromedial setae far behind anterior margin (Fig. 13). Abdominal tergite II with S1 two thirds as long as segment, with 4 lateromarginal setae; tergites III–VIII with S1 setae about one third to half as long as segment; tergite VIII comb complete, very short, sparse or with fine microtrichia in clusters (Figs 15, 16); ctenidia on abdominal tergites V–VIII, tergite IX with two pairs of campaniform sensilla. Pleurotergites with sparse, short ciliate microtrichia, without discal setae. Sternites III–VII with a single row of discal setae, sternite II often with 1 discal seta and sternite VII with discal setae absent medially;

Paratypes show variation in fore wing chaetotaxy, have their metanotum with two, one or no campaniform sensilla and variable sculpture (Fig. 14), and abdominal sternite VII with a variable gap in the row of discal setae.

Male unknown.

Type material. Holotype female, Ethiopia intercepted in Netherlands, Rijnsburg, Rosa cut flower, 2.xii.2004 (J.G. de Zeeuw), in NBC. Paratypes: 4 females, same collection data as holotype, 2 in NBC and 2 in SMF.

Other material (non-paratypes). 2 females, Netherlands, Rijnsburg (import Ethiopia), Rosa cut flower, 19.xii.2004, (J.G. de Zeeuw), in PPS.

Etymology. This species is named after Johan de Zeeuw, inspector of the PPS, unit Lisse.

Comments. This species shares the following character states with the species indicated: antennae 8- segmented; fore wing first vein with 7 or more distal setae; pronotal posteroangular setae less than 0.6 as long as pronotum; metanotal sculpture reticulate; sternites II–VIII with discal setae; pleurotergites without discal setae. T. longicaudatus (Bianchi) from Australia (Queensland), Samoa and the Philippines differs in abdominal tergite VIII posteromarginal comb absent medially and fore wing fore vein setae with a complete setal row or having a single interruption. T. simplex (Morison), a cosmopolitan species and major pest of Gladiolus corms, differs in antennal segment III yellow, ocellar setae III placed within ocellar triangle and the metanotal sculpture with wrinkles in the reticulations.
