Paraneseuthia joeparkeri Jałoszyński, 2014, sp. n.

Description

Paraneseuthia joeparkeri sp. n.

(Figs. 1, 3–4)

Type material. Holotype: WEST MALAYSIA (Perak State): ♂, two labels: " MALAYSIA, PERAK, Talping / Bukit Laruk (Maxwell Hill), N4 51.499 / E100 45.582 (90m), 4 X 2011 / Winkler, sifted leaf litter / J. PARKER" [white, printed]; " PARANESEUTHIA / joeparkeri m. / det. P. Jałoszyński, '14 / HOLOTYPUS " [red, printed] (MNHW).

Diagnosis. Body large (BL> 1.3 mm), strongly convex and covered with strikingly long setae; protrochanters and protibiae unmodified; aedeagus in ventral view with emarginate apex and a pair of lateral subtriangular projections and curved subapical parallel-sided ribbon-like structure of endophallus.

Description. BL 1.33 mm. Body of male (Fig. 1) stout and strongly convex, light brown, with slightly lighter setae.

Head broadest at large, strongly convex and coarsely faceted eyes, HL 0.20 mm, HW 0.30 mm; vertex and frons confluent and convex; supraantennal tubercles feebly marked. Punctures on head dorsum fine and inconspicuous; setae short, sparse and suberect. Antennae slender and with club composed of antennomeres IX–XI, AnL 0.58 mm, antennomeres I–III elongate, IV–VI about as long as broad, VII–X transverse, XI as long as IX–X together, twice as long as broad.

Pronotum subrectangular with broadly rounded corners (in Fig. 1 pronotum is tilted anteroventrally and the shape not possible to assess), broadest near posterior third; PL 0.38 mm, PW 0.53 mm; anterior and lateral margins broadly rounded; posterior margin shallowly emarginate in middle; pronotal base with two lateral pairs of small deep and distinct pits. Punctures on pronotal disc fine and inconspicuous; setae long, moderately dense and strongly erect.

Elytra oval, broadest near anterior third; EL 0.75 mm, EW 0.63 mm, EI 1.20; humeral calli well-marked, elongate. Punctures on elytra much more distinct than those on pronotum but very shallow and diffused, so that elytral surface appears less glossy than that of pronotal disc; setae thicker than those on pronotum, long and dense, strongly erect. Hind wings well developed.

Legs moderately long and slender, unmodified.

Aedeagus (Figs. 3–4) in ventral view bottle-shaped; AeL 0.38 mm; median lobe strongly and rapidly narrowing in apical region, with emarginate apex and two lateral apical subtriangular projections each bearing small seta mesally, sclerotized internal armature located in small subapical area and containing curved ribbon-like structure with parallel sides; ventral diaphragm circular and located sub-basally; parameres slender, not reaching apex of median lobe, each with two apical setae.

Female. Unknown.

Distribution. Peninsular Malaysia, Perak.

Etymology. This species is dedicated to Joseph Parker, a specialist on Pselaphinae, who collected the type material.

Remarks. Among known species of Paraneseuthia only P. spinosa Jałoszyński, 2010 from Sumatra and P. joeparkeri sp. n. are so remarkably large and stout, both species easily distinguishable from more slender and smaller remaining members of this genus. In addition to clearly different genital structures, P. joeparkeri sp. n. differs from P. s p i n os a in the body silhouette (different shape of pronotum and less strongly rounded lateral margins of elytra) and unmodified protrochanters (with a long projection in P. spinosa). These two species together with P. bi c ol or Jałoszyński, 2010 from Sumatra and P. titiwangsana sp. n. described below form a probably closely related group. They all share the slightly asymmetrical aedeagus with emarginate apex bearing a pair of subtriangular projections and a pair of apical setae; such structures are not known in any other Paraneseuthia.
