Neocorynura

Description

Key to the species of Neocorynura from Guatemala (Females)

The following key includes only the described species of Neocorynura known to occur in Guatemala. It is almost certain that there are additional species for this country (e.g. those species known to occur both in Costa Rica and Mexico) but without a comprehensive survey or study on the diversity of bees in the country it is hard to predict how many more species (described or undescribed) really inhabit the country. The presented key is only for females, in part owing to the fact that most species are known only by the female holotype.

1. Forewings with costal margin infuscate; base or propodeum black.............................................. 2

- Forewings hyaline; base of propodeum metallic green or purple................................................ 4

2(1). Mesoscutum with punctures broadly separated (> 1 PD) medially; body almost completely black....................................................................................... Neocorynura centroamericana Smith-Pardo

- Mesoscutum densely punctate (<1 PD); body with some metallic regions (mesoscutum or metanotum or base of propodeum or basal areas of tergites).................................................................................. 3

3(2). Mesoscutum with coarse punctuation; metanotum dark metallic green; T1 coarsely punctate on basal half (>1PD).................................................................................. Neocorynura cribrita Smith-Pardo

- Mesoscutum with fine punctation; metanotum black; T1 finely punctate throughout......... Neocorynura lignys (Vachal)

4(1). Head and mesosoma mostly metallic green; mesoscutum with medial-longitudinal dark brown band; T1 and T2 with basal metallic bands short, not extending past basal 1/4th of tergal lenght................... Neocorynura guatemalensis n. sp.

- Head and mesosoma mostly dark metallic reddish to pinkish purple; mesoscutum uniformly colored, except margins lighter; T1 and T2 with basal bands more extensive, covering 1/3rd to half the length.................. Neocorynura minae n. sp.
