Description

15. Anarsia melanodes Park, sp. nov.

(Figs. 15, 36, 56, 56 a–b, 65)

Holotype: , VIETNAM, Bac Khan Prov., Ba Be Nat. Park, 26–28 vii 2006 (Park, Chae, & Cuong), gen. slide no. CIS-6408. Paratypes: 8 , 1♀, same data as the holotype, gen. slide no. CIS-6409 & -6410 (), -6450 (♀).

Diagnosis. This species can be distinguished from its allies by the head densely covered with dark fuscous scales, the second segment of labial palpus (Fig. 36) trapezoidal, and the underside of fore and hindwing dark fuscous above the lower margin of discal cell to 2/3 the length of wings. The male genitalia are characterized by having a tapered process arising from beyond 2/3 of the ventral margin.

Description. Adult: Male (Figs. 15, 36). Wingspan, 11.5–12.0 mm. Head dark fuscous dorsally. Antenna about 3/4 the length of forewing; scape elongate, grayish white speckling with dark fuscous scales; flagellum grayish white, with pale brown annulations. Second segment of labial palpus in male (Fig. 36) quadrate, with broadly truncated apex; densely covered with dark fuscous scales on outer surface throughout; in female, third segment slender, dark fuscous in basal 2/3, grayish in distal 1/3. Tegula dark fuscous dorsally and also dark brown on anterior margin. Thorax grayish white speckled with dark fuscous scales. Fore and mid-tibia covered with dark fuscous scales ventrally; hind tibia yellowish brown on outer surface, without long hairs dorsally. Forewing elongate; ground color grayish white to pale orange gray, brownish scales scattered irregularly, more dense in distal 1/3; costa with a blackish short streak near base; slightly curved near 1/4, nearly straight medially, abruptly oblique beyond 3/4; costal patch more or less narrow, crescent, preceded and followed by two dark fuscous, small dots; apex more or less obtuse, blackish scales along margin before and beyond apex; termen strongly oblique, with dark fuscous scales along margin inwardly; fringe orange white in basal 1/3, grayish beyond, speckled with dark brown scales; underside dark fuscous to 2/3, above the lower margin of discal cell, without a long hair pencil on the underside. Hindwing grayish; anterior expansion abruptly truncate beyond middle; underside costal half dark fuscous in basal 2/3; apex acute.

Male genitalia (Figs. 56, 56 a–b). Abdominal sternite VII with hat-shaped membranous flap (Fig. 50 b). Uncus short, less than 1/2 the length of socius; socius ovate, large, width as wide as distal end of tegumen; Tegumen narrowed towards apex, slightly expanded at middle. Left valva large, elongate, acute apically, with a long, Sshaped, tapered process, arising from beyond 2/3 of ventral margin, extended to base of valve and with a large membranous pouch before middle; patch of long-stalked palmately modified scales occupying beyond the process. Right valva narrow in basal 1/4, then broadened and gradually narrowing towards apex, with a small triangular process near 1/3 and a large triangular process near 2/3; patch of scales similar to left valva. Saccus short, slender. Phallus taenioid, curved medially, broadened beyond 3/4.

Female genitalia (Fig. 65). Abdominal tergite VII with a small crescent membranous flap medially, connected with weakly sclerotized rings curved to antero-lateral corners. Apophyses anteriores short, about 1/2 length of apophyses posteriores. Ostium bursae deeply concave on caudal margin, funnel-shaped. Ductus bursae narrow, more than two times of corpus bursae in length. Corpus bursae oblong, weakly speculate on internal surface; signum long, transverse, sclerotized ridge with weakly sclerotized triangular plate beneath.

Distribution. Vietnam (Bac Khan Prov.).

Etymology. The species name is derived from the Greek, melano (= black), with a Greek suffix, odes, denoting resemblance.
