General distribution. Europe: Albania, Bulgaria, Cyprus, FYR Macedonia, Greece (incl. Crete). West Asia: Caucasus, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Palestine, Syria, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Turkestan, Uzbekistan. North Africa: Egypt, Libya, Tunisia (Zapparoli 2002; Minelli et al. 2006).

Chorotype. Turano-Mediterranean (TUM).

Ecological notes. 0–2300 m; a thermophilous species, generally in Quercus coccifera scrubs, in Quercus sp. woods, in steppic habitats, in Abies cephalonica and Pinus nigra forest habitats, in Mediterranean phrygana; also in agroecosystems, in anthropized habitats, and in caves (Verhoeff 1901; Zapparoli 1994, 1996, 2002).
