Description
Catocala toropovi Saldaitis, Kons & Borth, 2014
(Figs. 1, 2, 5)
Catocala toropovi Saldaitis, Kons & Borth, 2014, Zootaxa 3866 (4): 544, figs 1, 2, 7, 8, 12-26, 41, 44, 47, 50, 54 (Type locality:
“ Kazakhstan, Ili river, Barakhudzir”).
Material examined: in addition to the 24 specimens in the type series (see Saldaitis et al. 2014), we examined the following specimens: 2 females (Fig. 2), 8.VIII.2007, China, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, 29 tuan [county], Korla city, Jiangping Zhang leg. (in the collections of Anton Volynkin [Barnaul, Russia] and Shihezi University, Shihezi, Xinjiang, China); 1 male, Kazakhstan SE, Bakanas vill., Ili riv. env., 15-20.VIII. [19]94, leg. [A.] Saldaitis (in the collection of Katsumi Ishizuka, Saitama, Japan).
Diagnosis of female. Detailed comparisons of males of C. toropovi to C. repudiata (Fig. 3) and C. optima (Fig. 4) are presented in Saldaitis et al. (2014). In C. toropovi, there appears to be no obvious sexual differences in the forewing ground color, which varies from pale ochreous brown to dark brown (Figs. 1, 2). In the female genitalia, C. toropovi has a round postvaginal plate (Fig. 5), which in C. repudiata is rectangular with a slightly wavy posterior margin (Fig. 6), and in C. optima is rectangular with a concave posterior margin (Fig. 7). In addition, in C. toropovi the ostium appears broader than in C. repudiata and C. optima; the ductus bursae is longer and somewhat broader; and the 7th abdominal tergite is somewhat narrower than in C. repudiata and C. optima, and has rounded rather than pointed posterior edges (Figs. 5-7).
Description of female genitalia (Fig. 5). Papillae anales long and narrow. Apophyses anteriores and posteriors long and narrow; apophyses anteriores shorter than posteriores. Postvaginal plate broad and round; antevaginal plate (7th abdominal sternite) broad, conical, with deep and narrow concavity. Ostium bursae long, narrow, strongly sclerotized, dorso-ventrally flattened. Ductus bursae moderately long, narrow, strongly sclerotized, dorso-ventrally flattened, its anterior end connected with corpus bursae and membranous and narrow. Corpus bursae membranous, its posterior section ovate, anterior section globular; appendix bursae small, conical, postero-laterally positioned.
Distribution. C. toropovi is distributed in the Tien Shan mountain massif and its spurs. At present, it is known from the northern Tien Shan region in South-East Kazakhstan (Ili and Charyn rivers) and the southwestern Tien Shan region in Xinjiang (vicinity of Korla city).
