Description

Capederces madibai sp. nov.

Differential diagnosis. This new species differs from C. hauseri by its overall black coloration with four whitish/ ivory spots clearly defined on the elytra (Fig. 2), (C. hauseri overall coloration is more reddish, has crimson legs, and its four whitish/ivory spots on the elytra, shows a basal part more shallowly defined toward the elytra apex), and by its antennae shorter than body length. The antennal ratio is respectively 1.16 (Males) O.95 (Females) for C. hauseri and 0.7 (females) for C. madibai.

Type material. HOLOTYPE: ♀ “Resolution, [33°10'09"S, 026°37'11" E (-33.169187, 26.61972)] Albany distr. VI.1928. A. Walton ” (SAM- COL-A 060192) PARATYPES: 6♀ ♀. All the type specimens are deposited in the collection of the Iziko South African Museum in Cape Town, South-Africa (SAMC).

Measurements. HOLOTYPE: Body length: 9.08; antennae length: 7.18; pronotum length: 2.32; pronotum width: 2.02; elytra length: 5.23; scape length: 0.76; thorax length: 2.62; thorax width: 1.34. AR: 0.7.

Description. Body length range of the typical series: 7.0-9.08. Head. Frons flat, quadrate, densely and uniformly punctuated; apex of genae pointing forward. Antennal sockets, flat and widely spaced. The lower part of the eye lobes are longer than the genae. Vertex and scape densely and coarsely punctuated. Scape with a clear distal longitudinal groove. Third antennomere very elongate, equivalent in length to antennomeres 4 and 5 combined; subsequent antennomeres successively decreasing in length. Antennae dark brown, sparsely covered with hairs.

Pronotum. Surface with dense honeycomb-like punctuation. Scutellum. Surface micro-sculptured, distinct punctuation lacking. Prosternum, metasternum, and hind-coxae densely covered with whitish setae.

Abdomen. Integument black, first abdominal sternite densely covered with whitish setae. Elytra. Surface with dense, coarse honeycomb-like punctuation. Elytra black, humeri may be slightly crimson, and each bears two welldefined, ivory colored spots. Peripheral areas of spots are smooth, while middle is deeply punctured. Typical series shows very little variation between specimens. Elytra widest at 2/3 of elytra length. Elytral apex smooth.

Etymology. The species is dedicated to Nelson Mandela, also known by his clan name Madiba, a South African hero and Nobel Peace Prize holder, who passed away on 5 December 2013 at the age of 95.
