Gallinula olivacea Meyen 1834

Description

Gallinula olivacea Meyen, 1834a: 109, pl. 20.

Now: Amaurornis olivacea olivacea (Meyen, 1834a). See Parkes (1971), Taylor (1998).

Syntype: ZMB 13238 (Lichtenstein 1832, Nr. 61 or 62 sub “ Crex ”), skin, collected by Meyen in “ September ” [= 15–28 Sep 1831; see below] at “ Manila ” [= Manila, Luzon, Philippines; see below].

Syntype: ZMB 13239 (Lichtenstein 1832, Nr. 61 or 62 sub “ Crex ”), skin, collected by Meyen in “ September ” [= 15–28 Sep 1831; see below] at “ Manila ” [= Manila, Luzon, Philippines; see below].

Type locality. “ Manila, in der Nähe der Seeküste” (“ Manila, near the sea shore”) according to Meyen (1834a: 109). Lichtenstein (1832) added that the syntypes were collected in September. Meyen could have collected “near the shore” only during 15–28 September 1831, because he was inland on 29 September–8 October, and the fever he suffered after his return to Manila on 9 October precluded him exploring Manila and its vicinity thereafter, since his departure onboard the Prinzess Louise was on 15 October (Meyen 1835: 274–275). He thus must have collected both syntypes between 15–28 September 1831, when he remained in and near the city of Manila. Meyen (1834a) used “ Manila ” in the sense of both the city and to mean Luzon Island, so we ascertain the type locality as near the shores of Manila Bay at Manila, Luzon, Philippines [ca. 14.60°N, 120.95°E].

Remarks. Meyen (1834a) mentioned putative male and female plumages (i.e. at least two specimens), while Lichtenstein (1832) listed two relevant specimens. These two specimens thus constitute the type series.
