Kohnometopus Yasunaga 2005

Description

Kohnometopus Yasunaga, 2005

Kohnometopus fraxini (Yasunaga, 2012) [original description by Yasunaga (2005), see also Yasunaga et al. (2012)] (Figs, 2G–H, 6F–I, 9C–D, 10H)—Ryukyus (Ishigaki Island)—On bark and under loose flakes of Fraxinus griffithii. Note: Our examination on its femoral trichobothria (6 meso- and 6 metafemoral, Fig. 9C–D) and 5th instar nymph (with uniformly distributed, stiff setae on dorsum, Fig. 10H) suggests that Kohnometopus seems better placed in Gigantometopini rather than Myiommini. We observed several 5th instar immatures of either Myiomma minutum or M. samuelsoni, and found the dorsal surface lacks any stiff seta but has the appressed, wedge-shaped scalelike setae (Fig. 10F–G). Since the immature forms of most Myiomma species are unknown, the definitive tribal placement of Kohnometopus is beyond the scope of this study (see discussion under Sophianini).

Kohnometopus yangi (Lin, 2005) comb. nov. [= Isometopidea yangi Lin]—Taiwan (Taitung)—Unknown. Note: This species was described as a member of Isometopidea Poppius by Lin (2005), but the following characteristics suggest its better placement in Kohnometopus Yasunaga, 2005: Nearly holoptic head with compound eyes contiguous mesally; somewhat broadened antennal segment II and distinctly shortened segments III and IV; longer labium reaching abdominal sterna VII–IX (but in K. yangi somewhat shorter and not much exceeding abdominal sternum V); mesal length of pronotum less than half as long as basal width; posterior margin of pronotum horizontal, straight; narrow calli; flat, wide scutellum; and punctures on hemelytron weak and fine. These characters undoubtedly are shared by Kohnometopus, and we thus propose a new combination, K. yangi (Lin), transferred from Isometopidea.
