Papuoneanias lobatus

Description

Papuoneanias lobatus (Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1888)

Figs. 97 A–F

Material examined. New Guinea: New Guinea, leg. Schneider— 1 male (holotype) (Wien NHMW).

Description. Small species. Head: Face ovoid; forehead nearly smooth with scattered impressed dots and very fine transverse riffles; fastigium verticis wider than scapus, separated by a fine transverse suture from fastigium frontis; ocelli distinct; subocular furrows distinct (Fig. 97C). Abdominal tergites two and three with stridulatory pegs.

Wings reduced to rounded lateral lobes reaching to about hind margin of metanotum, not touching each other in midline, but with expressed venation (Figs. 97 A–B). Legs: Fore coxa with a spine at fore margin; fore and mid femora unarmed; fore and mid tibiae with 3 pairs of large ventral spines and 1 pair of smaller ventral spurs; hind femur with spines on ventral margins; hind tibia with spaced spines on both dorsal margins, ventral margins without pre-apical spine; with 3 apical spurs on both sides.

Coloration. General color yellowish brown without distinct pattern (formerly conserved in alcohol). Face between subocular furrows and area around ocelli yellowish white; fastigii, base of antennae, genae, and clypeus brownish.

Male. Ninth abdominal tergite prolonged and in apical area down-curved; at tip narrow, bifid with two short obtuse lobes, just before each lobe, on lateral ventral margin, with a short acute tooth (on the left side, that margin with the tooth is obviously broken, lying free on the subgenital plate) (Figs. 97 E–F). Subgenital plate transverse, at base wide and swollen; afterwards compressed, roughly triangular and with a large process moderately narrow at base and with split, bi-oval tip; styli rather short, little widened in middle, inserted at lateral angles of wide basal area (Fig. 97D).

Female unknown.

Measurements after Brunner (1888) (1 male).—body w/o wings: male 17; pronotum: male 5; tegmen: male 3.6; hind femur: male 12 mm.
