Lapazina arnaudi Tavakilian & Santos-Silva 2019, sp. nov.

Description

Lapazina arnaudi, sp. nov.

(Figs 14–16)

Description. Male. Head dorsally mostly black, ventrally dark reddish brown; mouthparts pale yellow; anteclypeus yellowish brown; labrum dark reddish brown. Scape black basally, gradually reddish toward apex; pedicel and antennomeres III–IV dark brown; antennomeres V–XI reddish brown on base (this area gradually shorter toward XI), gradually brown toward apex. Prothorax reddish brown, slightly darker on some areas. Scutellum reddish brown on large centro-basal area, dark brown along margins. Elytra black except light reddish brown distal area and dark reddish brown laterobasal sides. Ventral side of meso- and metathorax mostly dark reddish brown, slightly lighter on some areas. Femora reddish brown; tibiae black basally, reddish brown on remaining surface (this area lighter toward apex); tarsi reddish brown except dark brown claws. Abdomen orange.

Head. Frons densely micropunctate, interspersed with fine, sparse punctures; with white pubescence sparse on wide central area (absent on some areas), slightly denser laterally and toward antennal tubercles, denser on triangular area starting between antennal tubercles; with a few long, erect, yellowish setae laterally. Area between antennal tubercles and upper eye lobes finely, sparsely punctate; with white pubescence partially obscuring integument. Remaining surface of vertex finely, sparsely punctate; with white pubescence not obscuring integument except glabrous area near prothorax. Area behind eyes finely, sparsely punctate; with white pubescence not obscuring integument, except glabrous area behind lower lobes close to prothorax; with a few long, erect yellowish setae. Antennal tubercles densely micropunctate except smooth centro-distal area; with white pubescence not obscuring integument frontally and toward upper eye lobes, glabrous centrally. Genae densely micropunctate, interspersed with fine sparse punctures; with white pubescence not obscuring integument, denser toward frons, glabrous on apex. Median groove nearly indistinct from clypeus to middle of frons, distinct from this point to area between upper eye lobes and prothorax, then slightly distinct toward prothorax. Submentum smooth, glabrous except minute setae on area close to mentum. Distance between upper eye lobes 0.34 times length of scape; in frontal view, distance between lower eye lobes 0.83 times length of scape. Antennae 2.3 times elytral length, reaching elytral apex near apex of antennomere V; scape, pedicel, base of antennomeres with white pubescence; remaining surface of antennomeres with yellowish white pubescence not obscuring integument; ventral side of scape and pedicel with long, erect sparse yellowish setae (more abundant on pedicel); antennomere III slightly sinuous; inner ventral side of antennomeres III–X with long, erect brownish setae, gradually shorter, sparser toward X; a antennal formula (ratio) based on length of antennomere III: scape = 0.60; pedicel = 0.14; IV = 0.78; V = 0.44; VI = 0.39; VII = 0.33; VIII = 0.30; IX = 0.27; X = 0.25; XI = 0.24.

Thorax. Prothorax distinctly transverse, with basal and distal constriction (basal one more distinct), centrally with rounded protuberance. Pronotum with three large gibbosities, one centrally, subelliptical from apex of basal constriction to after middle, then carina-shaped toward distal margin, one each side of subelliptical gibbosity; distinctly elevated after basal constriction, with wide, transverse sulcus in front gibbosities; finely, sparsely punctate (punctures slightly coarser than on frons); with dark khaki pubescence obscuring integument basally and laterally, more yellowish basally. Sides of prothorax with dense dark khaki pubescence (more yellowish depending on angle of light source). Mesoventrite with yellowish pubescence distinctly not obscuring integument. Mesanepisternum and mesepimeron with dense dark khaki pubescence (especially on the former). Metanepisternum with yellowish pubescence not obscuring integument. Metaventrite with yellowish pubescence not obscuring integument, denser on some areas, glabrous or nearly so on some areas. Scutellum with white pubescence not obscuring integument. Elytra. Moderately coarsely, abundantly punctate on basal half, gradually finer, sparser toward apex; lateral carina moderately marked, parallel and close to humeral carina from base to near apex; with grayish white pubescence not obscuring integument dorsally, yellowish brown laterally except grayish white distal area; apex truncate, sinuous. Legs. Femora with white pubescence distinctly not obscuring integument. Tibiae with pale yellow pubescence not obscuring integument, bristly toward apex (more yellow or golden depending on angle of light source). Metatarsomere I slightly longer than II–III together.

Abdomen. Ventrites with pale yellow pubescence, partially obscuring integument laterally, interspersed with long, erect yellowish white setae.

Dimensions, male. Total length, 13.70; prothoracic length, 2.70; basal prothoracic width, 3.25; distal prothoracic width, 3.10; widest prothoracic width, 3.50; humeral width, 4.70; elytral length, 9.45.

Type material. Holotype male from FRENCH GUIANA: Saül, VII.1978, P. Arnaud col. [# 622 ex collection IRD] (MNHN).

Remarks. Lapazina arnaudi sp. nov. is similar to L. fuscipennis (Bates, 1881), but differs as follows: prothorax proportionally wider (Fig. 14); femora entirely reddish brown; tibiae black only basally (Fig. 15); abdominal ventrites orange (Fig. 15). In L. fuscipennis, the prothorax is proportionally narrower (Fig. 17), femora black at apex (Figs 17–18), tibiae entirely blackish (Fig. 18), and the abdomen is dark brown (Fig. 18).

Etymology. In honor of Patrick Arnaud French, entomologist who collected this unique specimen and gently offered it to the first author.
