Chinoperla biprojecta Lü & Yan & Li & Wang 2019, sp. nov.

Description

Chinoperla biprojecta sp. nov. (Figs 1 –5)

Adult habitus. General color brownish. Head dark brown with lateral margins, occiput brown, M line brownish; biocellate, ocelli set far aside and their span slightly wider than the distance from ocellus to inner margin of compound eye. Pronotum brown, much wider than long, with darker rugosities and midline, generally trapezoidal and corners obtuse; legs brown, femora yellowish brown; wings subhyaline and yellowish brown, veins dark brown, Sc typical of the genus.

Male. A medium sized Chinoperla. Forewing length 8.0–8.1 mm, hind wing length 7.0–7.1 mm. Sterna 3–5 with hair brushes. Dark median sclerite of tergum 9 mainly forming an up-side-down triangle but posterolaterally with two finger shaped projections, covered by several black tiny warts. Hemitergal processes slender, about 3X as long as basal width, basal callus of hemitergal process with patch of sensilla basiconica.

Aedeagus. Aedeagal tube partially sclerotized dorsally, forming a T-shaped bands, the band with a wide transverse median band and slender stalk connecting toward aedeagal base. Sac fully everted, nearly straight throughout but dorsal surface with a subapical, median lobe; a single large straight spine medially at apex and slightly directed ventrally; ventrally with four comb-shaped arranged spines arising from a triangular sclerite; laterally with two rows of armature consisting of 2–3 small to medium sized hook-like spines.

Female. Unknown.

Type material examined. Holotype male, China: Hainan Province, Ledong County, Jianfengling National Forest Park, Plant Park, 800m, 2007. X.24, Ding Yang (CAU); paratypes: 1 male, the same data as holotype, 2 males, Hainan Province, Changjiang County, Bawangling National Forest Park, 2006. VII.7–11, collector unknown (HIST).

Etymology. The species name refers to the pair of finger-like projections at posterior margin of the median process of tergum 9.

Distribution. Hainan Province, China.

Diagnosis. The male of the new species is distinguished from all other species in the genus by its unique dark posterolateral projections of the median process of tergum 9. The species, most similar in regard to the development of the dark terguml 9 process, seems to be the Thai species, C. spinata Sivec & Stark, 2010. However, the arrangement of the spines of the everted aedeagal sac easily separates the two taxa. In C. spinata, the apex of the sac has a single large median spine, but apex of the sac of C. biprojecta has large pairs of stout lateral spines in addition to a long straight median spine.
