Description

Oecetis kachinomekana spec. nov.

(Figs 12A 12C)

LSID urn:lsid:zoobank.org:act: 5E3718AA-743E-4645-9D6C-27DB5BB62155

Holotype ♂ (pinned), Myanmar, Kachin, 10 km north of Pan Wah, 25°37’44.4”N 98°23’23.6”E, 2465 m, 28.ix.2010, leg. S. Naumann, genitalia slide Mey 51/20 (MfN).

Etymology. The name is an adjective composed of “ Kachin ” and “mekana”, referring to the similarity of the new species to O. mekana Kimmins 1963.

Diagnosis. The new species resembles Oecetis mekana (Myanmar, Tenasserim) and Oecetis assamenesis Kimmins 1963 (Khasi Hills). With both species it shares the forewing pattern, the arched basal flagellomere, and the form of the inferior appendages. The long, curved spine (= cornutus) in the phallic apparatus has a round, basal plate, which is absent in O. assamensis. In O. mekana, the spine is very short and lies under an asymmetrically excavated dorsal margin of the phallic apparatus, which is an autapomorphic character of this species. Interestingly, the cornutus of the new species has a similar form in O. lynkeus Malicky 2005, described from Borneo, but this species differs from O. lynkeus by venational characters.

Description. Length of each forewing 7.6 mm, pale brown-yellow, with sparse short hairs on membrane and longer hairs on veins, apex acute, cross-veins darker and shaded with grey, costa with long, fringe-like hairs. Head, antennae and thorax pale yellow; antennae each with first flagellomere elongate, as long as scape and pedicellus together, slightly arched in basal half, but without hair pencil.

Male genitalia (Figs 12A 12C). Segment IX convex on anterior margins and concave on posterior margins in lateral view, with acute dorsolateral prolongations. Inferior appendages each with broad basal part and long apicodorsal branch extending from lateral sides dorsally, slightly curved mesad and rounded apically. Superior appendages small, oval, covering base of depressed, undivided segment X. Phallic apparatus with long, curved interior spine, arising basally on rounded plate.
