Dendrophyllia alternata Pourtales

Description

Dendrophyllia alternata Pourtalès

(tab. 3; fig. 3, 4)

Remarks. In tentacles and mesenterial filaments we observed a variety of b-rhabdoid (b-rhabdoid1: fig. 3E, L) with an oval capsule, a shaft that occupied half of the total length of an undischarged capsule, and a densely coiled tubule. In addition to the typical p-rhabdoid D (2) (fig. 3M), we noted another two forms in the mesenterial filaments (fig. 3N, O). As discrete distinction was not possible, we opted to characterize them as p-rhabdoids D (2), having capsules varied from oval to cylindrical shapes (fig. 4). Some of these cnidocysts probably exhibit more elongated spines in the tubule than those from typical p-rhabdoids D (2), since the diameter of their shafts is clearly larger. In tentacles, we noticed the typical p-rhabdoids D (1–2) (fig. 3F) and few capsules of the oval form, therefore separately considered in our description.
