Description

Bombus lapidarius lapidarius (Linnaeus, 1758)

It is distributed throughout the northern third of the Iberian Peninsula, between 350 and 1840 m. Individuals with the purest coloring tend to occur in high altitude and further north, while further south and west, hybrids with the subspecies decipiens dominate (Ornosa & Ortiz-Sanchez 2004).

Currently, it has been collected in Pyrenean forestal and supraforestal temperate-oceanic grassland, with patches of subalpine scrub between 912 and 2175 m (Fig. 7), on Centaurea scabiosa L., Cirsium acaule (L.) Scop., Cirsium arvense (L.) Scop., Digitalis purpurea L., Echium vulgare L., Eryngium bourgatii Gouan., Lamium amplexicaule L., Lotus corniculatus L., Medicago sativa L., Onobrichis vicifolia Scop., Prunella vulgaris L., Ranunculus acris L., Rhododendron ferrugineum L., Silene acaulis (L.) Jacq., Trifolium pratense L., Trifolium repens L., Vaccinium myrtillus L. and Vicia cracca L.

According to the current data, this species exhibits greater orophilous tendency (Fig. 7), but it is not regarded as being scarce or threatened (Table 2).
