Description
Siganus punctatus (Schneider & Forster in Bloch & Schneider 1801) —Gold-spotted rabbitfish
Status at New Ireland. New record, based on specimens observed by Jeff Kinch during CFMDP Survey at Kavieng fish market in 2004–2005, and by Barry C. Russell during 7–28 June 2015; a video of a specimen taken at Echuca Shoal, New Hanover, 15–34 m depth, St. KR 158, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell).
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2.—General distribution: Cocos-Keeling Islands (eastern Indian Ocean) and Indonesia east to Marshall Islands, Tonga and Samoa, north to Ryukyu and Ogasawara islands, south to northern Australia and New Caledonia. In pairs, lives in coral reefs, 1–40 m depth. Marine.
