Description
Bodianus axillaris (Bennett 1832) —Lyretail hogfish
Status at New Ireland. New record, based on a specimen in a video of a specimen taken in Nissel Passage, Kavieng District, at 6–22 m depth, St. KR 4, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell); another taken at Nubilus Island, off eastern New Hanover, 3–25 m depth, St. KR 90, in 2014.
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2.—General distribution: Red Sea, East and South Africa, Madagascar and Mascarenes east to Line Islands, Marquesas Islands and Pitcairn Group, north to southern Japan and Marshall Islands, south to Western Australia, New South Wales (Australia), New Caledonia, Lord Howe Island and Rapa. Usually solitary in lagoons and seaward reefs, 2–40 m depth. Marine.
