Hoffeinsodes inexpectatus WAGNER & HOFFEINS & HOFFEINS 2021, comb. nov.

Description

Species Hoffeinsodes inexpectatus (Wagner 2012), comb. nov.

(Fig. 1)

= Nemopalpus inexpectatus Wagner, 2012

= Palaeosycorax inexpectatus Wagner, 2017

Holotype. Male, collection no. GZG.BST. 22886 (old no. Z 3900) Baltic amber—Late Eocene (lodged in the amber collection of the Geowissenschaftliches Zentrum der Universität Göttingen, Germany).

Material. An additional two males in a single amber piece, one male complete; the second male lacks parts of the left side of the thorax and the fore abdomen segments, terminalia complete; CCHH 711-2 SDEI inventory number Dip 00899 (Fig. 1). The amber piece with the inclusions is embedded in a rectangular block of polyester resin (Voss- Chemie) (Hoffeins, 2001), with size 12 × 34 × 56 mm.

Emended diagnosis. A Bruchomyiinae species in genus Hoffeinsodes, gonocoxites large, connate with tips turned dorsally, gonostyli crescent shaped, epandrium with a pair of central bilobed appendages, and a pair of sclerites along lateral edge of epandrium, apically with robust tip.

Description. Head is as typical for the subfamily with roundish eyes and without eye bridge. antenna about as long as abdomen. Length of scapus, pedicel and flagellomeres: 0.07-0.10-0.25-0.18-0.19-0.16-0.16-0.16-0.14-0.14-0.11- 0.11-0.12-0.11-0.11- 0.11 mm.Ascoids not discernable (small or indistinguishable from hairs). Length of palpus segments: 0.12-0.14- 0.17-0.52 mm.

Thorax: wing about 3.5 times longer than wide; wing length: 3.67 mm. Basis partly hidden by debris. Wing apex is between R 4 and R 5. Radial fork distad of medial fork, R 2 is approximately 0.73 the length of R 2+3, CuA and CuP run parallel to wing margin. Metathorax with an oval sclerite dorsally behind halters with a row of small setae along apical edge.

Abdomen with eight segments and terminalia (Fig. 1A, C); first segment not markedly smaller than the following; inversion of the terminalia by torsion of segments 8 and 9 each by 90°. Terminalia (Fig. 1C, D) with voluminous gonocoxites connate in middle and with hypandrium. In lateral view gonocoxites strongly curved, thinner in middle with broad dark appendages turned towards epandrium; along apical edge with dark setae. Broad, light and crescent shaped gonostyli located between central protrusion and lateral arc of gonocoxites; tip rectangular and black. Laterally between gonocoxites and epandrium run thinly sclerotized elongate ‘lobes’, apically with few setulae in whorls, probably descending from the gonostyli. Aedeagus not visible.

Epandrium trough shaped, rectangular in lateral view; parallel to lateral edges of epandrium run dark clasps terminating in a robust tip turned upwards. A pair of bilobed balloon-like appendages along apical edge of epandrium between tips of lateral clasps (difficult to identify). Proctiger small; cerci oval, pale and setose.
