Description

Babelomurex lischkeanus (Dunker, 1882)

Synonyms:

TYPE MATERIAL. — Rapana lischkeana: holotype ZMB (Kosuge & Suzuki 1985: pl. 27, fig. 8). — Tolema peregrina: holotype AIM AK71138 (Kosuge & Suzuki 1985: pl. 27, fig. 23). — Tolema australis: holotype AMS C103333 (Kosuge & Suzuki 1985: pl. 47, fig. 3).

TYPE LOCALITY. — R. lischkeana: Seto Inland Sea, Japan. — T. peregrina: “trawled on Atrina beds near the entrance to Hauraki Gulf [NE New Zealand], probably in about 20-25 fathoms [37-46 m]”. — T. australis: off Sydney, New South Wales, 201 m.

BORDAU 2: stn DW 1524, 21°17’S, 175°00’W, 351-354 21°02’S, 167°32’E, 430 m, 1 dd; stn CP 467, 21°05’S, 167°32’E, m, 1 dd; stn DW 1543, 21°16’S, 175°18’W, 427-436 m, 1 dd 575 m, 3 dd (Fig. 84). (Fig. 178); stn DW 1549, 20°38’S, 175°00’W, 500 m, 1 dd; stn Norfolk Ridge. NORFOLK 1: stn DW 1663, 23°40’S, 167°42’E, DW 1585, 18°33’S, 173°57’W, 578 m, 1 dd.

DISTRIBUTION. — Southern Atlantic Ocean, off Namibia (Kosuge 1986b). Indian Ocean: from Réunion to Indonesia (Kosuge 1986b). Pacific Ocean: from Boso Peninsula (Japan) southward to east China Sea, Philippines, Australia, on “coarse sand and gravel bottoms in 50-200 m deep” (Tsuchiya 2000), and New Zealand, “subtidal to 400 fms” [732 m] (Cernohorsky 1978). From Loyalty Ridge, Norfolk Ridge and Tonga, empty shells only in 354- 578 m.

REMARKS. — Protoconch of 2.8 conical whorls, 970 Μm high, 910 Μm wide at the base. Protoconch-I of about 1 whorl, sculptured with pustules over the entire surface. Protoconch-II of about 1.8 whorls, with 2 spiral keels, and sculptured with a series of subsutural threads and a series of similar threads over each keel; a diffuse granulation is present in the interspaces.
