Description

Pachycephala gutturalis ashbyi Mathews

Pachycephala gutturalis ashbyi Mathews, 1912a: 313 (Blackall Ranges, Queensland).

Now Pachycephala pectoralis pectoralis Latham, 1801. See Schodde and Mason, 1999: 441–444, and Boles, 2007: 421.

HOLOTYPE: AMNH 657823, male, collected in the Blackall Range, 26.42S, 152.53E (USBGN, 1957), Queensland, Australia, on 29 September 1903, from the Edwin Ashby Collection. From the Mathews Collection (no. 2633) via the Rothschild Collection.

COMMENTS: Mathews gave his catalog number of the holotype in the original description. There are no other Mathews specimens from southern Queensland in AMNH that were collected before the publication of ashbyi.

Galbraith (1956: 200) synonymized ashbyi with queenslandica; Mayr (1967: 23) recognized both queenslandica and ashbyi, but see Schodde and Mason (1999: 443–444) for a summary of subsequent treatments. Schodde and Mason (1999: 444) designated a neotype for Pachycephala pectoralis Latham, 1801.
