Oxypterum Leach 1817

Description

Oxypterum Leach

Oxypterum Leach, 1817: 5. Type species: Ornithomyia pallida Olivier, 1811, by subsequent designation (Stephens in Richardson, 1836: 779).

Originally Included species: Ornithomyia pallida Olivier, 1811; Oxypterum kirbyanum Leach, 1817.

Family: Hippoboscidae.

Current status: Junior synonym of Craterina Olfers, 1816 [teste Soós & Hůrka (1986: 218)].

Remarks: Previous catalogs (e.g., Soós & Hurka, 1986: 218]) have given the typification of this genusgroup name as Oxypterum kirbyanum Leach, 1817 by subsequent designation of Westwood (1840: 154). Ornithomyia pallida Olivier, 1811 is the first of two originally included species in Leach (1817) and is currently considered the senior synonym of Oxypterum kirbyanum Leach, 1817, thus there is no change in generic concept with this type-species designation.
