Kaupichthys japonicus Matsubara & Asano 1959

Description

+ Kaupichthys japonicus Matsubara & Asano, 1959

R∗eAª

Kaupichthys diodontus japonicus Matsubara & Asano, 1959:293, figs. 1, 2A–B (type locality: Near Kametsu, Tokunoshima, Amami Islands, Japan).

Kaupichthys hyoproroides (not of Strömman, 1896): Shao et al., 2008:237. Kaupichthys diodontus (not of Schultz, 1943): Chen & Yu, 1986:255.

Voucher specimens: ASIZP 54931 (Heng-chun, Pingtung). Also represented by ten catalog records (41 specimens total) in the USNM collection collected by rotenone off southern Taiwan.

Remarks. Previous Taiwanese records of K. hyoproroides and K. diodontus represent misidentifications of K. japonicus and are not valid. The only voucher present in Taiwan is reidentified as the present species. It is notable that there are four rows (two on each side) of blunt teeth on the vomer, whereas the original description described only two, one on each side. However, one of us (KAT) has observed a number of specimens of Kaupichthys that have two rows of teeth on each side of the vomer.
