Description

The author highlights the theological schools existing in the northern part of Bessarabia in the mid-18th century. One of them was the Hotin School, led by Bishop Amfilohie Hotiniul. The historical data describes establishment in 1869 of other spiritual schools on the north of Bessarabia - first in Bălți, second in Edineț. In 1924, at the Dobruşa monastery, the Monastic and Church Singers Seminary was inaugurated. This school was meant to give church singers a special education, including knowledge of certain crafts, elements of pray books, general preparation of them for monastic life. For some time this school of singers was transferred to Rudi Monastery, then, in 1943, to Bălți. In 1927 at the Japca monastery the School of village housewives was organized, meant to teach young girls to practice various works of village household, next to general knowledge given. At the beginning of the 1938-1939 school year, the Seminary High School opened its classes in Bălți. In autumn 1938 four monastery schools for adults were inaugurated in the Diocese of Hotin, exactly in the monasteries of Dobrușa, Japca, Călărășăuca and Cușelăuca. The purpose of these schools was to reduce the number of illiterate monks. In development of education in the Diocese of Hotin, with residence in Bălți, the titular bishops who led the diocese played the main part in all period of its existence (1923-1944). After 1944 returned the situation of the years 1940-1941, imposed by the Soviet regime.
