Description

Coniceromyia memorialis sp. nov.

(Figs. 5A, 8Y, 15A, 20J, 25B)

Diagnosis (male). Wing with maculae adjacent to M 1, M 2 and CuA 1 (Fig. 15A), foremetatarsus with subtle anterior excavation and no strong seta at its base (Fig. 8Y).

Material examined. Holotype ♂, BRAZIL: Amazonas: Manaus: ZF2, km14, 2°35’S 60°06’W, 1–15.x.2016, Malaise trap, J.A. Rafael & F.F. Xavier Filho col. (MZUSP) [MZ053402].

Description. Male. Body length 2.3 mm. Head. Frons dark brown, sparsely setulose, with well-defined median furrow. Flagellomere 1 brown, conical. Arista apical, about 2.5 longer than flagellomere 1. Palpus light brown. Gena with two setae. Thorax. Scutum, scutellum and pleural regions dark brown; anepisternum dorsally setulose. Legs yellowish-brown, except femora brown. Foretibia with three dorsal setae and anterodorsal row of strong setulae. Foremetatarsus with subtle anterior excavation, anteroapical setulose process with strong seta at its base, no other strong differentiated setae (Fig. 8Y). Foremetatarsus ratio 0.44. Posteroventral face of hind femur with broad band of tiny blunt setulae (Fig. 20J). Hind femur height/length ratio 0.38. Hind tibia with one dorsal seta in basal half. Wing (Fig. 15A). Costa swollen, 0.42 of the wing length; very subtle vestige of R 2+3; maculae adjacent to M 1, M 2 and CuA 1; M 1 slightly sinuous; M 2 convex in basal three-fourths and concave in apical one-fourth, CuA 1 -M 2 /M 2 -M 1 ratio 1.48; CuA 1 mostly convex, except base sinuous. Halter white. Abdomen. Tergites dark brown. Hypopygium light brown (Fig. 25B). Left epandrial process dorsally setose, with a dorsal medially directed lobe and a subepandrial setulose elevation near hypoproct. Margin of right lobe of hypandrium without lateral projection. Hypoproct without setae.

Distribution. Known from a single site in Central Amazonia.

Etymology. Named in memory of the Museu Nacional do Rio de Janeiro, which was tragically destroyed by a fire in September of 2018.
