Description

Miltochrista lutara (Moore, [1860])

(Figs 4–9, 12, 13, 15)

Lyclene lutara Moore, 1859: 300 (Type locality: [Indonesia] “ Java ”).

= Setina dividata Snellen, 1880: 37

Type locality: [Indonesia, Sumatra] “ Soepajang … Alahan pandjang”.

Type material examined. Lectotype of Lyclene lutara (hereby designated) (Figs 4, 12): male, red ring round type label “Type H. T.” / blue label “ Arctiidae genitalia slide No. 5409 ♂ ” / QR-code label with a unique number “ NHMUK 010604679” (Coll. NHMUK).

Additional material examined. Series of specimens of both sexes from Indonesia: Sumatra, Java, Bali, Lombok and Flores Islands (Colls MWM/ ZSM, CKC and NHMUK).

Remark. In the original description, Moore (in Horsfield & Moore, F. [1860]) cited four specimens (listed as ‘a. b. c. d.’) of both sexes which are syntypes. The external similarity of M. lutara to some other species of the Miltochrista distributed in the Greater Sunda Islands (e.g., M. peloa Swinhoe) and the sexual dimorphism make the identification of species more complicated. In order to stabilize the nomenclature and avoid any confusion in the future we hereby designate the dissected male syntype labeled as ‘Type H.T.’ and preserved in the NHMUK collection as lectotype.

Distribution. The species is widespread in Indonesia (Sumatra, Java, Bali, Lombok and Flores Islands).
