Description

Convolvulus aculeatus Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 1: 155. 1753.

"Habitat in America calidiore." RCN: 1280.

Lectotype (Gunn in Brittonia 24: 153. 1972): [icon] " Convolvulus Americanus, subrotundis foliis, Viticulis spinosis " in Plukenet, Phytographia: t. 276, f. 3. 1694; Almag. Bot.: 115. 1696.

Current name: Ipomoea alba L. (Convolvulaceae).

Note: Verdcourt (in Hubbard & Milne-Redhead, Fl. Trop. E. Africa, Convolvulaceae: 130. 1963) designated material in Plukenet’s herbarium (now part of Herb. Sloane), never seen by Linnaeus, as the lectotype. However, it is not original material for the name.
