  • 1. Department of Botany, Natural History Museum, Cromwell Road, London, UK

Description

Centaurea lippii Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 2: 910. 1753.

"Habitat in Aegypto inter Alexandriam & Rosette." RCN: 6581.

Type not designated.

Original material: [icon] in Isnard in Mém. Acad. Roy. Sci. Paris 1719: 169, t. 10. 1719.

Current name: Volutaria lippii (L.) Cass, ex Maire (Asteraceae).

Note: Although Jeffrey (in Kew Bull. 22: 133. 1968) indicated Herb. Linn. 1030.4 (LINN) as the holotype, the sheet is not annotated with the Species Plantarum number (i.e. “4”), was a later addition to the herbarium and is not original material for the name. With the existence of other original material (the Isnard illustration), Jeffrey’s statement cannot be treated as correctable to a neotypification (Art. 9.8).
