Cereus peruvianus Mill.

  • 1. Department of Botany, Natural History Museum, Cromwell Road, London, UK

Description

Cactus peruvianus Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 1: 467. 1753.

"Habitat in Jamaicae, Peru apricis aridis maritimis." RCN: 3577.

Lectotype (Heath in Calyx 2: 70. 1992): [icon] " Euphorbii arbor Cerei effigie, sive Peruvianus Cereus vulgi " in Plantin, Pl. Stirp. Icon. 2: 25. 1581.

Current name: Cereus peruvianus (L.) Mill. (Cactaceae).

Note: Keisling (in Darwiniana 24: 444. 1982) provided a neotype for Cereus peruvianus Mill. (1768). He did not regard this name as a new combination based on Cactus peruvianus L. so did not typify the latter and, in fact, suggested that it should be rejected as a nomen dubium. Hunt & Taylor (in Bradleya 10: 19. 1992), however, rejected this interpretation, and the name was formally typified by Heath.
