Description
Paspalum virgatum Linnaeus, Systema Naturae, ed. 10, 2: 855. 1759.
["Habitat in Jamaica."] Sp. Pl., ed. 2, 1:81 (1762). RCN: 469.
Lectotype (Hitchcock in Contr. U. S. Natl. Herb. 12: 116. 1908): Browne, Herb. Linn. No. 79.6 (LINN).
Current name: Paspalum virgatum L. (Poaceae).
Note: Baum (in Canad. J. Bot. 45: 1846. 1967) disagreed with Hitchcock’s choice of a Browne collection as type, arguing that Linnaeus’ name was instead based on a cited Sloane illustration. However, the Browne collection is clearly original material for this name, and Hitchcock’s 1908 type choice has priority.
