Bauhinia tomentosa Linnaeus 1753

  • 1. Department of Botany, Natural History Museum, Cromwell Road, London, UK

Description

Bauhinia tomentosa Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 1: 375. 1753.

"Habitat in India." RCN: 2953.

Lectotype (Roti-Michelozzi in Webbia 13: 153. 1957): [icon] " Bauhinia foliis subrotundis, flore flavescente striato " in Burman, Thes. Zeylan.: 44, t. 18*. 1737. - Typotype: Herb. Burman (G).

Current name: Bauhinia tomentosa L. (Fabaceae: Caesalpinioideae).

Note: De Wit (in Reinwardtia 3: 411. 1956) wrongly chose a neotype (original elements are in existence), and so Roti-Michelozzi’s choice of a Burman plate appears to be the earliest. Although other authors (e.g. Isely in Mem. New York Bot. Gard. 25(2): 190. 1975; Rudd in Dassanayake & Fosberg, Revised Handb. Fl. Ceylon 7: 38. 1991) reached different type solutions, that of Roti-Michelozzi has priority.
