Relbunium hypocarpium Hemsl.

  • 1. Department of Botany, Natural History Museum, Cromwell Road, London, UK

Description

Valantia hypocarpia Linnaeus, Systema Naturae, ed. 10, 2: 1307. 1759.

["Habitat in Jamaica."] Sp. Pl., ed. 2, 1: 1491 (1762). RCN: 7604.

Lectotype (Dempster in Allertonia 5: 306. 1990): Browne, Herb. Linn. No. 1219.13 (LINN).

Current name: Relbunium hypocarpium (L.) Hemsl. (Rubiaceae).

Note: Ehrendorfer (in Bot. Jahrb. Syst. 76: 536. 1955) noted that the name was based on Browne’s account but failed to trace any Browne specimen in LINN and therefore felt a neotype would be necessary. However, 1219.13 (LINN) is original material for the name.
