Description

Caroperla longilobata sp. nov. (Fig. a–f)

Adult habitus ( Fig. a). General color pale brown. Head brown, with a large oval dark brown marking, covering ocelli and frons area; Triocellate, anterior ocellus smaller, head slightly wider than pronotum. Pronotum paler than head, rectangular, covered with obscure darker markings, corners rounded. Wings brownish, veins darker. Legs pale brown.

Male (Figs. a–f). Body length ca. 9.5 mm (from head excluding antennae to tip of forewing). Forewing length ca.

FIGURES a–f. Caroperla longilobata sp. nov. (male). a. Adult habitus, dorsal view. b. Terminalia, dorsal view. c. Terminalia, ventral view. d. Terminalia, lateral view. e. Cerci, dorsal view. f. Cerci end, apical view.

7.2 mm, hindwing length ca. 6.4 mm. Epiproct upcurved subapically, anterior margin distinctly sclerotized, posterior margin membranous, upturned apex seemingly globular in dorsal and lateral views (Figs. b, d). Paraprocts recurved in basal half, directed upward, apical half flattened, subtriangular in outline (Figs. b–d). Basal cercal segment about 5X as long as wide (Figs. b–e); segment 1 of cerci drumstick-like, with a long and large seta and several long thin hairs at tip; a triangular spine laterally on segments 2–3; remaining segments of cerci with 1–3 long setae (Fig. f). Abdominal tergum 10 with a large dark brown triangular mesal sclerite; terga 7–9 with mesal patches of thickened setae, also medially interrupted by a narrow membranous patch. Abdominal terga and sterna with setal brushes on posterior edge; those on lateral margins of sterna 8–9 conspicuous. Sternum 9 with a long and large semicircular mid-posterior plate, extending beyond the posterior margin of sternum 10 (Fig. c).

Type material. Holotype male (CAU), CHINA: Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Laibin City, Jinxiu County, Mt. Dayaoshan, N 24°16, E 110° 36, 1210 m, 1982.VI.13, Chikun Yang.

Etymology. The specific name is a noun in apposition, referring to the long and large plate on sternum 9. Latin “longi” and “lobus” means “long” and “projection”, respectively.

Distribution. China (Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region).

Remarks. The dark brown head pattern of the new species is typical of the known species of Caroperla. The new species is similar to C. longiseta and C. siveci, sharing the globular epiproct and mesal patches of thickened setae on terga 8–9. The mid-posterior plate in sternum 9 of C. longilobata is similar to C. pacifica from Japan. The new species is most similar to C. longiseta, which is also mostly pale brown in general color and has a triangular mesal sclerite on tergum 10. However, C. longilobata may be easily separated from other described species of the genus by the mesal patches of thickened setae on terga 7. Additionally, in C. longilobata, the mid-posterior plate in sternum 9 is semicircular and extends beyond the posterior margin of sternum 10. In addition, the apical margin of cercal segment 1 has the only long, modified seta on the dorsal surface.
